"A New Hope" doesn't mean what you think it means

May 25, 2017

I was so excited to be preaching a sermon on this topic. I don’t know how I got so lucky but I got to preach on A New Hope! A New Hope is of course, the first Star Wars movie that launched them all. The first time I saw A New Hope was my first time in Grauman’s Chinese Theater on Hollywood blvd. That giant Star Destroyer ship seemed to fly out of the balcony and fill the entire theater. We all know that song don’t we. Da da da da dada da dada….

What…wait…you mean A New Hope isn’t about Star Wars? I’m not preaching on Star Wars? Well, I sure got that wrong. You wouldn’t think a simple phrase like, a new hope, could mean such entirely different things to different groups of people. The same thing was true in Jesus day. People didn’t understand the new hope he offered. And, it turns out, many people today don’t understand it either.  Let me put away these notes about Star Wars and give you this thought. Many Christians act as if coming to have a relationship with Jesus is the end of the race, when it is actually just the beginning. 2 Cor 5:17 describes the beginning of our journey, not the end of it.

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
